Each morning sleepy office workers get up and try to get moving . . .

. . . for another day at work.

Workin’ nine to five, what a way to make a livin’.

Violet trains the new girl, Judy: “Gotta hustle, gotta bustle, gotta scoot, you gotta scurry, ’cause we got no time to fool around, around here.”

Mr. Hart’s administrative assistant, Roz, delivers the latest memo on office décor (No personal items.) and reveals her love of the Boss, Mr. Hart: “What a man,” which Violet echoes with irony.

Mr. Hart passes his time at work pleasantly.

He welcomes the new employee with a compliment: “You’re not bad looking for a girl with a little tread worn off her tires. I mean that. Sincerely.”

Hart enjoys the view as his secretary, Doralee, fetches a document from the top shelf. He sings, “I’m here for you, I’m here for you. I want you so, I truly do.”

It’s been a terrible first day for Judy. Even the Xerox machine is against her, but despite all, she sings, “I just might make it work.”

Doralee’s officemates shun her because of class issues. She defends herself: “I’m just a backwoods Barbie, but . . . I run true and deep . . . and where it counts I’m real.”

Doralee confronts Hart over his telling everyone that they’re having an affair: “If you say another word about me . . . , I’ll change you from a rooster to a hen with one shot.”

Meanwhile, Roz reveals her passionate love for Mr. Hart: “You’re my handsome prince come to sweep me away and into the sunset to love me always . . . heart to Hart.”

Judy, Violet, and Doralee share a Maui Wowie joint and talk about their awful life at work.

They begin to fantasize about how the tables might be turned.

Judy’s fantasy: In a nightclub from a 1940s era film set, after the Dance of Death, Hart pleads for his life: “Is it because I’m a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot?”

In Doralee’s fantasy of western justice, Hart is tied up and branded with a Double-D.

Violet envisions a fairy tale in which she is a beautiful princess who mixes up a magic potion that makes Hart disappear.

Everyone in the Magic Kingdom rejoices: “Joy to the girls! They’re free at last!”

Violet complains to Joe about being expected to do the shopping for the office: half-and-half, Skinny and Sweet, rat poison, ant poison. Joe fancies Violet but tries to be professional in his office conduct.

After making Hart his morning cup of coffee, Violet realizes that she has confused the Skinny and Sweet with the Rat-B-Gone.

The three women visit the morgue, where Violet changes from intending to confess to murdering her boss to getting rid of the body to learning that Hart is not in the morgue.

Hart catches the women when they have returned to the office to clean up any traces of rat poison. When he threatens to call the police, Doralee ties him up with the phone cord.

After some reversals, the women subdue Hart and take him to his house . . .

. . . where he is suspended using a garage door opener, as the women sing, “When it’s said and done, we’re gonna shine like the sun!”

Now that Hart is out of the way, Violet thinks about her dream of becoming a CEO; no longer held back by the Old Boys Club now “This old gal is one of the boys.”

The office is abuzz with excitement as everyone reads the new memos instituting longer lunch breaks, allowing personal items on desks, and other means of making the office friendlier.

Violet admits to Joe that the women have kidnapped Hart and are trying to find evidence that Hart has been cooking the books. As a company accountant, Joe can help. Joe declares his love for Violet, singing “Let love grow.”

Judy’s former husband, who had left her for his secretary, has returned, expecting to be welcomed back, but Judy now tells him, “Get out and stay out.”

Joe and Violet find clear evidence of Hart’s embezzling activity.

But Hart has gotten free and tells everyone that his lawyers can clear up his bookkeeping errors, while they are all going to jail for assault, kidnapping, and attempted murder.

Chairman of the Board, Mr. Tinsworthy, arrives with congratulations about the recent 20% rise in productivity. Hart takes the credit.

Violets admits to kidnapping Hart, but she then speaks up for the office workers who kept everything running while Hart was playing golf, drinking Scotch, and taking all the credit. “This place was hell until we fixed it.”

Tinsworthy understands the situation and “promotes” Hart to a job in Bolivia while appointing Violet the new CEO.

Violet and Joe’s romance blossoms.
