In a small, provincial French village, townspeople sing “That girl is so peculiar” because Belle likes to read.

Gaston, the handsome, narcissistic, egomaniacal bachelor, wants beautiful Belle as his trophy wife.

Belle's eccentric father, Maurice, assures her “No I'm not odd — nor you.”

On the way to the fair to show off his invention, Maurice loses his way and is set upon by wolves.

Maurice seeks refuge in an enchanted castle in which the servants are turning into objects: Babette the feather duster, Cogsworth the clock, Lumiere the candle stick, Chip the tea cup, and Mrs. Potts the tea pot.

The Master of the castle is an enchanted prince, forever changed into a hideous beast unless he can love and be loved in return before a magic rose drops all its petals.

Gaston proposes marriage to Belle: “We shall be the perfect pair, rather like my thighs.”

The local girls can't believe the news: “She turned you down?”

Gaston's lackey, Lefou, is wearing the scarf Belle gave her father, but Lefou is no help in locating Maurice, so Belle decides to find him herself.

Inside the Beast's castle, Belle encounters Lumiere and Cogsworth.

Belle convinces the Beast to release her father from the castle dungeon by agreeing to take his place.

Instead of the dungeon, Belle is shown to her room, where she wonders whether this will be her new home forever. She is waited on by Madame de la Grande Bouche (an opera-singing wardrobe) and Mrs. Potts.

Back at the tavern, Gaston's chronies cheer him up with a rousing drinking song dedicated to him.

Lefou and Gaston hatch a plan to get Belle's submission by locking her father in a lunatic asylum.

The Beast first orders Belle to join him for supper, then requests politely, but she still refuses, so he roars, “If she doesn't eat with me, she doesn't eat at all.”

The feather duster and candle stick resume a long-standing flirtation.

Against the Master's orders, the whole staff turns out to invite Belle to “Be our guest!”

Even the napkins are in on the revolt.

Cogsworth gives Belle a tour of the castle.

Belle wanders unescorted into the forbidden West Wing and reaches for the magic rose under a glass dome.

The Beast catches Belle and, after sending her away, sings of his regret of his heartless act that resulted in his being transformed into a monster.
